BIKE theft is on the increase, police have warned.
In recent weeks an increasing number of bicycles have been reported lost or stolen across the Isle of Man.

The majority that are reported to police stolen were not left in a secure location, therefore making them ideal targets for an opportunistic thief to steal.

A spokesman for Douglas Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: 'I would advise any cycle owner to use some simple crime prevention measures such as locking your bike when it is unattended, not leaving it in your front garden and locking it securely away at night in a shed or garage.

'If you are unfortunate enough to have your bike stolen, a photograph of the bike showing the make and model would greatly assist in its identification and recovery.'

The majority of bikes have a serial number that is located underneath the pedal crank of the bike.

'I would urge owners to make a note of this number and keep it in a safe place in case you are an unfortunate victim of crime,' he added.

'These measures will assist police who recover pedal cycles on a regular basis, unfortunately far too often the owner cannot be traced.'
For further crime prevention advice contact any police officer or visit: www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk/vehiclecrime/vehiclecrime063.htm for further information on protecting your bike.
