TRAFFIC diversions will be in force when Bucks Road, Douglas, is resurfaced next month.
The work – scheduled to start on Sunday, August 3, and to be completed in phases by Thursday, August 14 – is part of the Department of Transport's ongoing highways maintenance programme.

The first phase will cover from the junction with Circular Road up to the junction with Christian Road.

However, the Circular Road/Bucks Road traffic signals will not be affected and access will be maintained to and from Christian Road during both phases.

The section from Circular Road to Christian Road will be closed between 8am and 6pm on Sunday, August 3, to allow the existing road surface to be removed.

From Monday, August 4, until Thursday, August 7, the same section will be closed from 6.30pm until 10pm to enable the new road surface to be laid.

Access to Albert Street and Mona Street during the road closures will be from Christian Road, via the lane which runs parallel to Bucks Road, while access to Princes Street will be via Tynwald Street, via the lane running parallel to Bucks Road.

The second phase of the works will be from the junction with Christian Road to the Rosemount traffic signals. This section of Bucks Road will be closed on Saturday, August 9, from 8am-6pm to enable the existing surface to be removed.

There will be no access to Merton Bank from Bucks Road between 8am-10.30am that day.

From Monday, August 11 until Thursday, August 14 the road will be closed between 6.30pm-10pm to enable the new road surface to be laid.

Where possible, access will be maintained to Merton Bank during these evening closures, except when the final surface is being laid across the junction.

There will be no access from Demesne Road or Kensington Road on to Bucks Road during the second phase of road closures; traffic looking to exit Demesne Road will be diverted at the Raphael Road junction, and traffic wishing to exit Kensington Road will be diverted via Kensington Avenue on to Rosemount.

If any delays are encountered during the second phase of roadworks, a road closure will be in place on Sunday, August 17, between 8am until not later than 6pm to enable the works to be finished.

Director of highways Bruce Hannay said: 'To minimise the disruption this essential highway maintenance will cause, our works will be undertaken in two phases, principally within the weekend and evening periods, with Bucks Road closed to all vehicles at this time.

'However, it will also be necessary to carry out some work during the normal working day, although this will be after the morning peak traffic and, where possible, the disruption to traffic will be kept to a minimum.

'We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience our works may cause to businesses and residents in this area.'

Amendments will be made to bus services during the road closures.

Any chance of the DOT bothering to fix Johnny Watterson's Lane, which is in desperate need of repair, instead of messing around doing 'essential maintenance' on roads in the centre of Douglas which are in much better condition? While I'm at it, Ballanard Road's a mess too…

Agreed on JW lane it is a disgrace, there are a couple of pot holes that wouldn't be amiss in Baghdad!! If the Island has enjoyed 25 years of unbroken financial growth, why do we have to suffer Third World highway infrastructure?

Were MHKs scoring cheap political points by attacking the Steam Packet in Tynwald this week?
Yes - we all know the situation is unsatisfactory and what we need now is answers
No - they were only responding to public opinion and representing the views of the electorate
