PERFORMANCES from the Mananan International Festival of Music and the Arts will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 early next month.
They will feature daily on the Lunchtime Concert programme from Tuesday, August 5, until Friday, August 8, starting at 1pm.

More music from the festival will feature in the Discovering Music programme on Radio 3 on Sunday, August 10, at 5pm.

During the festival a Radio 3 event was held for the series and it included an in-depth analysis of Schubert's posthumous song-cycle, Schwanengesang, performed by baritone Hakan Vramsmo with Julius Drake (piano).

This year was the 34th Mananan Festival and it ran at the Erin Arts Centre, Port Erin, from June 15 to 29.

When news of the broadcasts was announced earlier this year it was hailed as an 'historic alliance' between the centre and the BBC.

Among the performances recorded were concerts by the Carducci String Quartet joined by Swedish baritone Hakan Vramsmo and pianist Julius Drake, violinist Tasmin Little and pianist John Lenehan and pianist Cedric Tiberghien.

Director of the EAC Dr John Bethell was delighted to announce the broadcasting plans and it was a culmination of 34 years of hard work by Dr Bethell and his team of loyal volunteers.

They have worked together to develop the festival, and to carve out its reputation for excellence and as a venue that holds world class events and where audiences are treated to exceptional performances.

Radio 3 producer Les Pratt said at the time: 'The festival has a very long tradition here, so perhaps, after 34 years, you might be forgiven for thinking: "It's about bloody time!" But I'm sure you'll agree, it's better late than never.'

For full details of the concerts that will be broadcast see below.
Sam Alder, executive chairman of the Arts Council, congratulated Dr Bethell for his achievement over the decades. He described the announcement as an 'historic alliance' between BBC Radio 3 and 'a small but immensely powerful arts centre'.

Mr Pratt added: 'It's wonderful that BBC Radio 3 is able to reflect some of the cultural life of the Isle of Man and, in particular, to recognise the hard work and success achieved here at the Erin Arts Centre by its tireless director John Bethell and his amazing team of volunteers.

'How and why does it all work? Claire Clennell made it clear in her book Dreamer of Dreams that at the centre of every web is the founder/director weaving his magic, making every artist feel like a star, making every helper feel so much better for having helped, and every patron so much more fulfilled for having attended.'

Dr Bethell said at the time: 'How extraordinary to get something so special after 34 years.'

There is no doubt the broadcasting of the concerts is a very important milestone for the Mananan Festival and is a wonderful way of showing to the world the fantastic musicians the centre attracts.
