IT'S the ultimate rags to riches musical comedy.
A great story, vintage songs, and a script wittily reworked by actor Stephen Fry, Me & My Girl opens at the Gaiety Theatre next Thursday (July 31).
Described as fun for all the family, it follows the standard formula for a good ol' musical comedy. There's a 'happy ever after' love story, a lovable rogue taking on the stuffy establishment plotline and musical numbers which you can't help humming along to.
Fresh from the highly acclaimed Underneath the Arches last summer, Taylorian Productions' second show stars Simon Fletcher as happy-go lucky Lambeth costermonger Bill Snibson.
When he's revealed as the new Earl of Hareford, his newly-discovered aristocratic relatives are horrified. But their attempts to educate him into the ways of the gentry and separate him from his cockney girlfriend Sally (Rachel Wild) have hilarious results!
Among the host of hilarious characters are Lisa Kreisky as society gold-digger Lady Jacqueline Carstone, Trisha Fargher as the Duchess of Dene, Bob Harrison as Sir John Tremayne, Alex Toohey as the Honourable Gerald Bolingbroke, Matthew James as Herbert Parchester and John Short as Charles the Butler.
Me And My Girl still holds the record as the most performed musical comedy in the history of West End theatre, so when the opportunity to stage a production of the fun-filled musical came along, award-winning director/choreographer John Cumberlidge jumped at it.
'It's wonderful to again direct one of my favourite shows. I love it because it's got absolutely everything,' said John.
'It has uplifting songs, lavish costumes and witty one-liners, all of which go to make it one of the most memorable shows of all time.
'The joy of this piece is that it's something completely different and universally entertaining.
'Literally, it's a piece of feel-good theatre – a sublime and sunny treat for all lovers of musical comedy.'
Among the several toe-tapping numbers are the showstopping Lambeth Walk, The Sun Has Got His Hat On, title song Me and My Girl and one-time Island favourite George Formby's Leaning On A Lamppost.
Slickly choreographed, all-singing, all-dancing, and all-clicking spoons – well worth the bread and honey!
Me & My Girl runs for 10 nights from Thursday, July 31, until Saturday, August 9.
